Fish Pathology Archive
Histopathology is the microscopic study of sectioned and stained diseased tissues. It forms the basis for understanding physiological and pathological processes, and is an essential tool for diagnostic and research programmes.
Fish Pathology Archive (FPA)
Fisheries Research Services (FRS) has over 30 years experience in the diagnosis and interpretation of tissue pathology from wild and farmed fish and shellfish pathology. Experienced scientists carry out a suite of light microscopy techniques that allows interpretation and disease diagnosis, health monitoring and reporting to the highest standards. Archiving material into the FPA within FRS is standard practice and complemented with additional images in an electronic format.
What the FPA Reference Collection Provides
A valuable resource containing stained tissue sections, electronic images and colour transparencies of diseases from wild and farmed fish
The FPA is updated and enhanced regularly from research and other case material
The FPA provides teaching and reference material that contributes to rapid and accurate diagnosis of infectious and non-infectious conditions in fish and shellfish
Facilities
Microtomes are available for wax and resin tissues, and a cryostat for frozen material
Research microscopes are used for brightfield and phase microscopy with full photographic facilities
Photographic facilities are also available for gross observations
Image analysis software is used in research applications and the improvement of diagnostic profiles
